Questions general contractors ask about marketing
Straight answers for remodelers and general contractors on reviews, Google Ads, Houzz, qualifying leads by budget, the benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.
How many Google reviews does a remodeling company need?
More than the two firms you get compared against on the kitchen bid. Across 116,602 general contractor listings the median is 9 reviews and 51.3% have fewer than 10. Only 9.3% have passed 100. Because remodelers finish 30 to 60 projects a year rather than 900 service calls, you will never win on volume alone. Ask at the walkthrough on every single job and 25 a year is realistic. See the reviews guide.
What does a remodeling lead cost on Google Ads?
Expect $80 to $250 per form fill or call in most metros for "kitchen remodel" and "bathroom remodel" terms, and $300 or more per booked site visit once you strip out the tire kickers. That sounds brutal until you put it against a $24,000 average project. One signed kitchen pays for a quarter of clicks. The mistake that kills accounts is bidding on "contractor near me" and "home remodeling" broad. Details in the Google Ads guide.
How do I stop driving out to estimates that were never going to buy?
Qualify on budget before the truck moves. Two questions on the form and one on the phone: what room, what range have you set aside, and when do you want work to start. A homeowner who will not name a range is not insulted by being asked, they are usually relieved. Firms that add a budget field typically cut site visits by a third and raise close rate at the same time. The pricing and quoting guide has the exact wording.
Is Houzz worth paying for?
The free profile is worth building and keeping current, because it ranks, it feeds AI answers, and homeowners browse it while they are still dreaming. The paid Houzz Pro lead packages are a different question: leads are shared, cost $80 to $200 apiece in most markets, and arrive early in the cycle. Treat it as one channel among several, never as the whole plan. The website guide covers how to reuse the same photo sets everywhere.
Do I need a website if my work is all referral?
The referrals check the site before they call you. That is what it is for. The benchmark data is blunt here: contractors with a website carry a median of 14 reviews against 2 without one, and 23.8% of contractors link no site at all. A referral who cannot find project photos, a license number and a service area often calls the second name on the list instead.
Should I show my license and insurance on the site?
Yes, in text, on every page footer, with the license number written out. Homeowners spending $40,000 check. State boards publish searchable license lookups and a fair number of buyers use them. Putting the number in plain text also makes it visible to AI answer engines, which read text and ignore the badge image you uploaded in 2019.
What should Facebook and Instagram ads do for a remodeler?
Not close jobs. Fill the top of a long funnel and stay in front of people who already visited. Before and after carousels of one room, shot from the same corner, outperform anything produced in a studio. Budget $20 to $40 a day cold, plus $5 a day retargeting the last 180 days of site visitors, which matters because your close is 60 to 180 days out. See the Meta ads guide.
How do I show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a remodeler?
The answer engines reward plain, specific text and consistent identity. A complete Google profile, the same name and address everywhere, project pages that name the town and the scope in sentences rather than in a gallery, reviews that mention actual rooms, and a license number in text. The AI search guide walks the whole checklist.
What is a realistic close rate on remodeling leads?
Between 20% and 35% on qualified estimate requests for most residential remodelers, and closer to 10% if you bid everything that calls. The calculator on this site assumes 25%. If yours is below 15%, the problem is usually the qualifying step, not the marketing.
Is the benchmark data trustworthy?
It is public data collected at scale, so it is accurate to within a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place and refreshed monthly. The category is broad and includes construction companies, home builders and specialty trades that file themselves as general contractors, which is exactly the field you compete with in the map pack. The method is on the about page.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for general contractors and construction companies in every state. Only public business fields are stored, never reviewer names or personal details. The full report is at benchmarks.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one of the services we run, or several: Google Ads, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, portfolio and social content, review generation, missed-call text-back and long-cycle follow-up, email and SMS, bookkeeping, and appointment setting. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you run ads, is yours.
What happens after 14 days?
You decide. Keep it at the monthly price quoted before the trial starts, switch to another service, or stop. Nothing renews on its own and nothing is charged during the trial. Given the length of a remodeling sales cycle, most owners judge the trial on the quality of the estimate requests, not on closed contracts.
Do I need to give a credit card?
No. There is no card on file at any point during the trial. We ask for access to the accounts involved and about 20 minutes on a setup call. Text or call (385) 832-6175 or use the free trial page.
